I believe this is the conservative decision that will need to be made. That is not to say that Rudy is not a good man.
In fact let’s get this out on the table: I will vote for ANY Republican over ANY Democrat, even John McCain. Even Ron Paul. By the way, Ron Paul is my US Representative. I KNOW Ron Paul. As a country, we simply cannot afford a Democrat president, especially if there is the very real chance of having a Democrat Congress.
OK, the decks are clear.
I believe both Romney and Thompson are good men, both conservative. Neither is pure as they have both taken positions in the past that are openly not conservative. But either due to a conversion, or being more mature or maybe feeling the conservative wind blowing, they both have pretty consistent, clear conservative positions. So I don’t think this should be an ideological decision.
This is an electability question. Again, the country cannot afford a Democrat (read Hillary) President.
So, how do we decide?
I listen to Mitt Romney and he comes across as smart, quick knowledgeable. He was accomplished and successful as governor or Massachusetts. And my friend, for a Republican to be a successful governor in that socialist stronghold is saying something. Additionally he has a successful business career. He is a wonderful candidate.
Fred Dalton Thompson has been an assistant US Attorney and a US Senator among other things. Of course, he has also been an actor. From Wikipedia: A 1994 New York Times profile described his character roles in the following terms:
"The glowering, hulking Mr. Thompson has played a White House chief of staff, a director of the Central Intelligence Agency, a highly placed F.B.I. agent, a rear admiral, even a senator. When Hollywood directors need someone who can personify governmental power, they often turn to him."
I first remember Fred Thompson as Rear Admiral Joshua Painter - USS Enterprise in the movie “Hunt for Red October”. I DO remember even then, thinking this man SOUNDS Presidential.
And THAT is my point in this whole post. Mitt Romney will likely make a good president, IF he gets there. So will Fred Thompson. But Fred Thompson will come across as Presidential across a stage from Hillary. Mitt Romney will come across as a candidate for President. When Romney answers a question, it comes across as the right answer that you would expect from a candidate. When Thompson answers it sounds like he is telling you what he believes.
That is the key point. Fred Thompson will be a believable, conservative Presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton comes across as….Hillary, a lying, liberal, self serving, high pitched harpy.
Who do you think Hillary would prefer to run against?
